Fusion pioneer and seven-time Grammy award-winner Wayne Shorter, a tenor and soprano saxophonist without equal, steps into the acoustic realm in a special collaboration with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
Shorter is a brilliant instrumentalist at the vanguard of the generation of tenor saxophone moderinsts who emerged after John Coltrane. As he evolved from a driving hard bopper to a master of modal jazz, he co-founded the seminal group Weather Report which created a new hybrid of jazz-rock known as fusion or progressive music. Among Shorter's compositions now considered classics are Speak No Evil, Infant Eyes, Witch Hunt and Footprints.
This performance is part of Liverpool Philharmonic Hall's Fresh Festival.
"The master writer to me, in that group, was Wayne Shorter. He still is a master. Wayne was one of the few people who brought music to Miles that didn't get changed."
Herbie Hancock
"Wayne is a real composer. He writes scores, write the parts for everybody just as he wants them to sound. He also brought in a kind of curiosity about working with musical rules. If they didn't work, then he broke them, but with musical sense; he understood that freedom in music was the ability to know the rules in order to bend them to your own satisfaction and taste.”
Miles Davis
'One of the most significant composers and individual saxophonists in jazz'
